The Osprey
by
Alan Rigby
An 80 year old closet twitcher.
The Osprey wild and free
Hunts it’s prey over land and sea.
High in a tree they build their nest.
There, their chicks to breed and themselves to rest
These magnificent birds are by law protected
And their nest sites are never neglected.
Volunteers keep watch on the chicks
So that evil people can’t get up to their tricks.
The birds in flight
Are a magnificent sight,
To see them dive to catch a fish
Is a sight, better than you could wish.
The average brood is two or three,
But even one for the future is greeted with glee.
To help the numbers increase
The efforts of volunteers will never cease.
The adult has a two metre wing span
Similar to the width for a six foot man
Over many miles it can glide
To find the prey that’s unable to hide.
If these birds at a protected site you wish to observe
You will need magnification for your optic nerve.
If on the nest you wish the chicks to see
Then I’m afraid you will need closed circuit TV.
But if in flight, one you are lucky to see
Then my friends that is entirely free.
Enjoy the spectacle while you can
As this one of the best sights known to man.
In winter to Africa they will migrate.
The chicks as well fly south and can’t be late.
So well fed and strong they need to be
To fly so far over land and sea.
In the Spring they will return.
The same tree to breed they will not spurn.
The chicks come back to the same area as well
To live and breed and it is hoped, to dwell.
Each chick on its own will be
Looking for a mate to raise a family.
If on a mate each one can alight
The future for the Osprey in the wild will be bright.
