Going to the Match
by
Alan Rigby
An 80 year old Wanderer’s supporter and Lowry lover.
Going to the match.
Oh what a catch.
Back where it belongs.
Back at the Lowry correcting wrongs.
For many years it belonged to the PFA
As “part of their pension fund” they say.
But now to auction was their wish,
Perhaps with the money to fry other fish.
The painting was up for auction,
To lose it for the nation, was not an option.
At the last moment came a gift.
Hopefully there would be no rift.
The painting was bought for the gallery.
The cost of it being as much as a lifetime’s salary.
Now the painting is back where it can be seen
By Lowry lovers as a matter of routine.
For Bolton Wanderers supporters as well,
Now the painting is a place to dwell,
Where thanks to Lowry’s vision,
Come memories of Burnden Park and the First Division.
This wonderful painting of the Great Lever stand
Remembers the crowds on the terrace and the forecourt land.
On match stalk legs, to the match they hurry,
Trying as they rush, about the result, not to worry.
L S Lowry, thanks to your vision and skill
Wanderers fans their memories can fulfil,
And Lowry lovers the world over
With this football masterpiece are in clover.
