Auschwitz, a Reality
by
Helen Scott
Helen is from the Wirral. She has written around 70 poems, each stimulated by her experiences. Helen wrote this following a visit to Auschwitz a few years ago.
The time has come, I hope I’m prepared,
For I made a vow to come here and see.
This place was a ‘Hell on Earth’, for innocent souls,
My own family where destined to be.
At home in comfort I watched and read,
But here and now this is reality.
To see, to feel, to sense and touch,
These unbelievable places did exist, now I see.
Six million hopes of a future, long since passed,
No fulfilment for their lifelong goals.
Those lives were taken cruelty so,
Such empathy I have for those poor souls.
For many years these places have been,
For me, a nightmare in a dream.
Having to sit up suddenly in the night,
And scream! And scream! And scream!
World history, to this present day,
Is marred by the cruellest wars.
But the ruthless acts which occurred right here,
Nazi planning and order was the most evil of all.
An organisation built for extermination,
For Jews, Romanies, the handicapped and Poles.
To eliminate the so called ‘impure’,
Such a terrible fate for those poor souls.
But their dastardly deeds did falter,
From survivors, a new generation come what may.
Life goes on, but you are never forgotten,
Those memories can never be taken away.
In the stark eeriness of this place,
Can it be that birds will again sing?
And that buds will unfurl,
Into the colours of another spring.
For me to find forgiveness now,
I dig deeply into my soul.
To be able to turn the other cheek,
With help, that is my goal.
From the breaking of the dawn,
Until the setting of the sun.
My thoughts will always be with you,
These words will never be undone.
I have with me some poppies,
That I will leave for all to see.
And my interpretation of what,
A poppy is to me: -
P Persecution
O Of
P People
P Peacefully at rest
I In
E Everlasting
S Sanctuary.
