A Siren Club
by
Peter Green
Peter is a lifelong Tottenham supporter.
Brought up in London he now lives in Dorset.
Tottenham Hotspur won the Europa League on 21st May beating Manchester United in the final. It was their first trophy in 17 years. However, victory in daring to do (audere est facere) did not spare Ange Postecoglu from the sack, manager/head coach number 15 to depart under the chairmanship of Daniel Levy.
Thomas Frank is to be Spurs new manager.
Spurs are a siren club, and they are my club.
Now there’s the rub!
The hunt for glory is the alluring story
the ending … inevitably gory.
Coaches still queue, their numbers accrue
to win cups long overdue,
to wake dreams from sleep, too long, too deep
perchance rewards to reap.
Row against the tide, with eyes and ears wide
the end’s still suicide.
Hearing the siren call, playing Ange ball
he was doomed to fall.
Yet, Ange Postecoglu, won a prize overdue –
sacked, but he dared to do.
A tailpiece
The Sirens’ calls dispel the gloom
sweet invites to their rocky room
allurements to a watery doom.
