07. Landmarks of Our Past
Churchill Way, the Dockers’ Umbrella
Landmarks of our past
They kept our city moving
We thought that they would last
It seems that nothing is endless
New Brighton Tower, the seawater baths
Wrestling and gigs at the Stadium
Visiting these places was a blast
Meeting under Dickie Lewis
At Rushworths and Beaver Radio
Shopping at Coopers and Woolworths
And then off to the Shakey for a show
Dovecot Baths and Gregson’s Well
Exchange Station and George Henry Lee
Getting our greens from Waterworths
And watching the boats from the quay
Good nights we had in the Hippodrome
In the Scala, and the Gaumont in the Dingle
Waiting for the film to start
You were guaranteed a tingle
Queuing outside clubs was usual
Beachcomber, Ugly’s and The She
The Babalou and the Coconut Grove
At the Cabin a nurse could get in for free!
All hospitals of good repute have gone
Mill Road and Myrtle Street
Two Royals and the Southern
And the city hasn’t missed a beat
Our friend George said All Things Must Pass
Like the Footy Echo and collecting the pools
These things have gone as time has changed
But to us they were wonderful jewels
Perhaps a generation or two from now
Will be making the same observation
But let’s just hope it won’t be about
The Liver Buildings and Lime Street Station
