Letter to My Great, Great, Great, Great Grandchildren
My dear, dear offspring, I’m your four times great granddad.
I’m writing to you from in the past. I’ve no idea what you’re doing.
I’m certain information technology has moved on at a pace.
By now this could well be a hologram of me you are viewing.
In my day we only had 85 inch Ultra High-Definition TVs,
And the iPhone 16 was the very latest edition from Apple.
You could be reading this on Planet Mars for all I know.
That’s something with which I’m trying very hard to grapple.
That prompts me to ask, did space tourism ever take off?
A few wealthy folks here have paid a fortune to get into space.
The furthest your four times great Nan and I got,
Was old fashioned B&B in Filey when we visited her birthplace.
I was married for 50 years to your great, great, great, great Nan
I wonder if marriage is still a thing 100 years from now?
By the way, did cryonic preservation ever take off?
If so, did you manage to thaw Walt Disney somehow?
Can I ask about politics? Did the Tories ever recover?
Tell me, is the House of Lords still a sustainable institution?
Did politicians manage to reduce illegal immigration?
How did they get on with all that dreadful river pollution?
What kind of things are you eating in the times you live?
I loved spaghetti bolognaise and a nice vindaloo curry.
You might be living on water and nutritional injections.
Has obesity been conquered yet, despite the calories worry?
How are you getting on with that carbon footprint?
Are windfarms to be seen everywhere in your days?
Are the temperatures still getting hotter and hotter?
Has someone found a better way to harness the sun’s rays?
I have to ask about Everton. Are they in their new stadium yet?
Are Liverpool still challenging for the Premier League title?
Did Man City ever have the 115 charges against them heard?
To ensure things were just and even those charges were vital.
Please God, I hope the Americans have limited the use of guns.
If not, I expect there has been a civil war by now.
Talking of wars. How did the Middle East pan out?
Has someone found a two-state solution? If so, how?
Back in my day, driverless cars were still just a dream.
A guy called Elon Musk was making some headway.
Although people were getting rather worried,
When a pedestrian was killed in a trial in the USA.
A ban on smoking indoors was introduced in my lifetime.
But vaping then took up much of the slack.
As I write there’s talk of banning smoking outside of pubs.
I’m in agreement but the Government is taking some flack.
I’ve often thought how good it would be to converse with your dog.
Has some bright spark found a way to do that yet?
Dogs would have some tales to tell of the things they’ve seen.
They’ve probably had to introduce a hippocratic oath for the vet.
Well, I’ll sign off now and thank you for reading this letter.
I’ve enclosed a selfie of me and your four times great nan.
By the way, I’m the baldy and wrinkled old fellow.
Your nan is the good looking one with hair and a tan.
