Big School

Mum’s got me ready for big school.
I’m wearing a blazer two sizes too big.
Brand new shoes the size of canoes.
I’m late and I’m sweating like a pig.

This is no way to ease myself in,
Flaunting a new bag and pencil case.
My new tie is done up far too tight.
I’m already bright red in the face.

I’m stood for the obligatory photograph.
‘Walter, polished and ready for big school.’
‘Smile son I’m putting this on Facebook.’
‘Please mum don’t, that would be really cruel.’

Happily, others are like me in Year 7.
Crisp new white shirts set us all apart.
Only fingernails showing below the cuff.
Mum said this would give me a head start.

The end of the first day has finally arrived.
I’m walking home with my new school friends.
My shoes are scraped, shirt’s outside my pants.
I’ve lost a pen, a book; oh, and a contact lens.

I had no need to worry; it’s been really good fun.
All my new friends have blazers too big as well.
Their photos are all over Facebook just like mine.
I’m quite looking forward to tomorrow’s school bell.
