The Man with the Shopping Bags
We don’t know how many hundred were killed,
On 4th June 1989, In Tiananmen Square.
A massacre of resisting students.
A bloody red line. They didn’t have a prayer.
A day later a brave man stood in front of a tank,
His two shopping bags in hand.
An unknown protester became known as Tank Man,
And he was prepared to make a stand.
Against the odds they confront for what they believe,
These brave souls standing up to tyranny.
Prepared to confront, to challenge and deny.
Their principles writ large for everyone to see.
Tank Man we applaud you.
You’ve given us a yardstick.
You drew a line in the sand.
Your confrontation did the trick.
