Sitting Next to Rosa Parks
I’m sitting by Rosa on a bus in Montgomery town.
‘Rosa, please stand up, just don’t cause a scene.
The white man will throw us off the bus,
And I’ve got a someone’s house to clean.’
‘Not this time my friend; It’s time to make a stance.
That man is no more deserving than me.
I’ll not stand up no matter what he says.
When I got on the bus this seat was free.’
‘Rosa, your politics will have you in trouble.
You can’t beat the system; you just won’t win.’
‘A bully needs confronting if anything is to change’
He’s going to have to take this one on the chin.’
‘Rosa, my dearest friend I so love your bravery.
But your politics are sure to get you arrested.’
I know my dear. But come what may.
This outrageous segregation has to be tested.’
Rosa was arrested and that resulted in a transport boycott.
A year later Rosa’s case led to a Supreme Court decision.
Segregation on Alabama buses was declared unlawful.
All because of Rosa’ bravery and her vision.
