When I Was a Child
When I was a child…
I never thought I’d ever need to brush my eyebrows
I wouldn’t believe hair would sprout from ears
I never imagined my teeth would be in a glass overnight
Or that I would start drinking half pints of beers
When I was a child…
I never imagined I’d not be able see my feet
I didn’t think I’d be afraid to turn on the news
I couldn’t imagine I wouldn’t be keen on driving my car at night
And that every afternoon at two-thirty I’d go for a snooze
When I was a child…
I didn’t expect for a moment I’d have oat milk in my tea
I’d think you were lying about my prescription being delivered to my door
I wouldn’t have believed I’d pay fifty quid to watch a football match
Or should I fall over I would need two people to help me up from the floor
When I was a child…
I couldn’t have foretold I’d be driving a battery-operated car
I’d have found it impossible to think of me shopping online
I wouldn’t have believed I could fly to the South of France for £19.99
Or that they’d have technology to see if a football crossed the goal line
When I was a child…
I’d never have expected to be able to tune into 200 channels on my TV
It was inconceivable that I could do my banking on my phone
I didn’t imagine seeing someone on something called Zoom
Or a Prince be stripped of his titles and denied access to the throne
