Overcoming Disappointment
Overcoming Disappointment

With Alice I had fallen truly in love.
We were very much hand-in-glove.
I went down on one knee.
Asked her if she’d marry me.
She said I will, if push comes to shove.

Undeterred, I planned my next move.
I asked her father if he would approve.
I have to confess it came as a shock.
Like I’d been struck with a rock.
He said, ‘No lad, on yer bike, move.’

Alice burst into floods of tears.
I slunk to the pub for some beers.
I was baring my soul to the barmaid.
Saying sadly I’d been ditched I’m afraid.
She asked me out, I said yes, she said cheers.

In next to no time we were wed.
Moreover, we were successful in bed.
Along came first born Chloe.
Followed very soon by Zoe.
Then Daniel, Jane, Adam and Fred.

Per chance I bumped into Alice.
She said her Dad had been callous.
I said it was water under the bridge.
And I no longer cared a smidge.
I said to her I bear you no malice.

The barmaid and I remain content.
Mostly on nappies my money is spent.
Financially it’s a struggle.
Monthly payments I have to juggle.
It was only for a pint that I went.
