21. The River Runs Through Us
The river runs through us
It’s like our heart and soul
‘twixt The Pool and the Wirral
It’s got a starring role
The wonderful river Mersey
It’s our artery to the world
And it’s our route back home
To where our flags are unfurled
We’re proud to live in Merseyside
With a glorious maritime past
Where very special people
Stand together all steadfast
The love for our home is clear
Its deep in the hearts of us all
Instilled in each and everyone
From the time we learned to crawl
From St Helens to West Kirby
And Runcorn to Wallasey
Merseyside is etched in us all
Every road, every field, every tree
Indeed we’ve endured our tragedies
And the Blitz tried to tear us apart
The Three Graces survived intact
Still on the river, cemented in our hearts
The decline of our great docks
Emigration from the city
We’ve survived it all with grit
Even noted it with an odd little ditty
I wish I Was Back in Liverpool
In My Liverpool Home
Ferry ‘cross the Mersey
Tribute songs, enough to fill a tome
Tunnels, ferries and trains
Like ribs from the sternum to the spine
Connecting all parts of Merseyside
That great river has been a life line
The river runs through us
It’s like our heart and soul
‘twixt The Pool and the Wirral
It’s got a starring role
