20. Across the Water
There is a place close to my heart that makes me very proud
Where my ancestors once lived their lives for me
And the packet boats and liners jostled on the tide
Before they made their way out to the sea
Across the water in Liverpool town
Where the Liver birds always look down
Across the water in Liverpool town
When I was just a young boy, my grandad told me tales
Of the voyages he’d made and what he’d seen
And he painted vivid pictures of those strange and distant lands
And they still live on in my memory
Across the water in Liverpool town
Where the Liver birds always look down
Across the water in Liverpool town
And Thomas Smith the carter, he carried all the goods
With his wagons and his horses there he’d be
Loading bales of cotton for the mills of Lancashire
From the tall ships that were moored along the quay
Across the water in Liverpool town
Where the Liver birds always look down
Across the water in Liverpool town
When Annie married John they were just the kids next door
Twenty years before Victorias’ jubilee
And she lived on through the century and the last of two world wars
And she saw the next queen crowned in fifty-three
Across the water in Liverpool town
Where the Liver birds always look down
Across the water in Liverpool town
And in that place close to my heart, I still feel very proud
Of my ancestors who lived their lives for me
Where the ferry boats and liners still wait upon the tide
Before sailing down the Mersey to the sea
Across the water in Liverpool town
Where the Liver birds always look down
Across the water in Liverpool town
