Knitting at the Gallows

Click, click, click go the needles,
As woollen clothes slowly appear.
Shhhhhhhhud goes the guillotine,
As the eager crowds all cheer.

Another poor soul on the gallows.
Basket emptied, needles resume.
Entertainment for the masses,
As the butcher fetches his broom.

Queuing for benches from dawn.
Front row seats for the knitters.
Many petrified heads will roll today.
No place for those with the jitters.

Again a cheer as another one falls.
Blood is swept away once more.
A ragged cardigan is nearly done.
The headcount is up to a score.
